Key Pests in Tweed Heads
Tweed Heads is a pest paradise, with the warm year round temperatures hand high rainfall coming off the Great Dividing Range, the conditions are ideal for insects and infestations can get quickly out of control.
For homeowners, in particular, the warm moist climate make it an ideal environment for high levels of termite activity - regular termite inspections are a must! With the high rainfall and Tweed river, mosquito and biting midges can also be a problem in Tweed Heads.
Our general pest treatment will deal with most pest problems, but if you have a particular pest problem of infestation, it may be necessary to have a specialised pest treatment. We also offer a range of commercial pest services to keep businesses, particularly hotels and the hospitality industry, pest free.
Termite inspections and treatments in Tweed Heads
Government bodies, building authorities and Australian Standards recommend that homes are inspected for termites at least once a year and more often in areas of high termite pressure. Tweed Heads is in an area of high termite pressure, so inspections twice a year is strongly recommended, especially if you don’t have termite protection in place.
Our professional termite inspections will not only pick up any signs of termite activity but will also assess your property for conditions and construction faults that may make your home more likely to suffer a termite attack. However, without a termite protection system in place, between one inspection and the next, termites will still be able to get into your home without being noticed.
It’s particularly important to be alert to termites in the Tweed and on the Gold Coast, as over the last few years there have been a couple of cases of infestation of the giant northern termite. This termite, which is normally found in Townsville and the Northern Territory, is several times bigger than the normal termite species and can destroy a home in months.
Standard home insurance policies do not cover termite attack, so it’s a smart investment to get a termite protection system installed. With termite attack more likely than flood, fire and other natural disasters combined, in many ways a termite protection system is really more important than your home insurance!
About Tweed Heads
Tweed Heads was first seen by Europeans in 1823, and it’s natural beauty, the mountain backdrop, river and forested areas made it an area of great potential for settlers. With the natural forests, the timber industry was the first to develop in 1844 and once areas of land were cleared farmers moved in focused on dairy, sugar cane and bananas. With the Tweed River providing easy access to the sea, a fishing industry quickly developed.
Tweed Heads quickly became a desirable location to live and a tourist destination. The Tweed Heads and Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club opened in 1911. However, the Tweed Shire was not declared a council area until 1947.
Trivia: Tweed Heads was the location of the fictional town of Porpoise Spit in the film Muriel’s Wedding.
